1. Describe what it is that you do.
I’m a Bikini Competitor. In fitness competitions, there are different divisions; Bikini, figure, physique, bodybuilding, etc. They all require hard work and dedication in the gym and with your diet. For me, I lift weights 5-6 days a week and incorporate high intensity interval training into my cardio routine to most effectively burn body fat. As for diet, I follow what is called “Flexible Dieting” or “If it Fits Your Macros” where you would track your protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake each day and reach your optimal numbers while being sure to consume enough fruits, veggies, and fiber each day.
2. What is one of the biggest challenges you had to overcome to pursue your passion?
One of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was to stop worrying about what other people think of me. This is what I’m passionate about, it is who I am, and what I love to do, so why should I let the opinions of others bother me? At first I have to admit that they did. Some people would truly put me down, and even those who I thought I was close to would be extremely unsupportive. As time went on, I learned that those who truly care for me would be the ones to show support. As for the rest, I had to hold my head high and not let it get to me- you can’t please everyone.
3. What accomplishments are you most proud of, thus far?
Last year in July I did my first bikini competition (The OCB Yankee Classic) and I placed second overall. I had no expectations going into that show, with it being my first one and I was just so happy to even be there. It was shocking and humbling, and it made me push myself to where I am today.
4. What are your ultimate goals?
My short term goals at the moment are to stick to my diet and training regimen (which I can honestly say I love doing, so it won’t be a problem 🙂 ) and to bring my best possible package to my upcoming show in LA – The NPC West Coast Classic. As for long term goals, I would love to become a sponsored athlete and become a Bikini Pro (meaning that you are able to compete with other “pros” or those who have taken first place in their competitions). I would also like to continue with my happy and healthy lifestyle, because I believe that mental health is just as important as physical health.
5. What or who inspires you?
I have been inspired by many people in the fitness industry. Layne Norton (a coach to many, PhD in nutrition) is who inspired me to be where I am right now. His principles and what he stands for are truly outstanding, especially in a money hungry industry. He gives out information for free (on his youtube video logs) in order to try and steer competitors away from coaches who may not know what they are doing (in the fitness world, we call these “bros” or “bro coahces”). His slogan is “Do you even science?” But the meaning behind it is that everything is based off science, and many of the myths in the fitness industry are completely made up and cannot be backed up by research. He is how I am so easily be able to coach myself through contest prep and still be happy and healthy.
6. What keeps you motivated?
What keeps me motivated is hearing from so many friends and family members that I’m THEIR motivation. That is all I need to hear to remember to keep kicking ass everyday.
7. What is your favorite quote?
“For me life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer.” -Arnold Schwarzenegger
8. What are you working on NOW?
I’m currently working on building up my network in order to have a successful career in the industry. I’m also in the middle of my contest prep and slowly cutting calories to lean out for my competition. However, what i’m most excited to work on in the future is slowly building up my calories post-show in order to build up my metabolic capacity and be able to stay fairly lean on a higher calorie diet. Yay!
9. Since allure and cure embraces some guilty pleasure,
What is YOUR guilty pleasure?
ICE CREAM. Flexible dieting allows for me to eat it almost every day while still dropping body fat (allowing that I hit my protein, fruit, veggie, and fiber goals for the day).
10. What is your favorite way to maintain health and wellness?
Maintaining my health and wellness is my passion, and I do that by consistently training 5-6 days a week and tracking my macronutrients. The gym is honestly my favorite part of the day, no matter what else I have planned for that day!
