Be in LOVE with life

Recently I was trying out a new gym here in New York City. While I was there discussing the option of joining one of the trainers came over to commend me on my squat form (which is much easier to perfect when I don’t go too heavy) The next day while I was there wrapping up my workout he began asking me about how I got started lifting and working out the way I do.  It was an interesting question because to me, the answer seems pretty obvious.  I told him it makes me feel good and I just want to maintain and stay toned.  He went on to ask about my goals and what my idea of an “ideal body” was…

“Like my ideal celebrity body?” I asked

“Sure,” he said “and please don’t say Kim Kardashian.”

I instantly thought of a million celebrities (including Kimmy) who all have amazing bodies, but all something different we would consider “ideal.” “This is crazy,” I thought.  As I went about my day it hit me that I have finally realized I am not working out or training to try to be or look like someone else.  At 23 I can honestly say I have come to a point where I am just completely comfortable with me and I am not really in the gym to try to look a certain way, I am in the gym to feel a certain way (and that way is amazing.)  I can guarantee he asked that based on history with clients saying, “I want to look like X,” and “I want legs like Y.”

This is a very important part about having a healthy relationship with a fitness lifestyle.  When you start to motivate yourself and workout you really need to also already love yourself. I don’t mean in an egotistical way, but in an appreciative way.  You appreciate this life here, and this body you are able to borrow while you are here. Love yourself so much that you want to be your best self.  You want to take such good care of you that you will workout to take care of your body so you can feel amazing.  In turn, over time, in a natural healthy way, you will begin to see the physical changes that you can also be so proud of.  Stronger, leaner, thinner, whatever it is you are working towards, but always have a goal to just be healthy and happy and you cannot go wrong. (Otherwise no matter how much progress you make, physically, you will never be satisfied, because at the end of the day, no ONE is perfect, we are ALL perfect.)

So be in it for the right reasons and all the right things will come to you! I am constantly learning more from the people I surround myself with and acquaintances at my gym who take time out to give me tips on form or show me something new.  As long as you make the step, even if you are not totally sure what you are doing at first, if you are in love with your life, health, well-being, and happiness it will all come together naturally!
